What Makes a Magnetic Gift Box Different
A standard gift box — the kind that folds flat and locks with a tuck — does its job, but it does not make an impression. A rigid magnetic gift box does something different. It holds its shape permanently. It opens with intention. It feels substantial in the hand because it is substantial — the board walls do not give, the wrap does not peel, and the magnetic closure engages the same way on the hundredth open as it did on the first.
That physical experience translates directly into how a recipient perceives the brand behind the box. Packaging that feels considered signals that the product inside was chosen the same way. For retail, gifting, and corporate programs, that signal is worth the investment.
Materials
Structural Core — Greyboard Chipboard
Every magnetic gift box begins with greyboard chipboard, the same dense, stable board used in hardcover bookbinding. It is available in five thicknesses:
- 1.5 mm — lightweight, ideal for jewelry and small cosmetic formats
- 2.0 mm — standard for mid-size gift boxes and apparel formats
- 2.5 mm — recommended for heavier products and multi-piece gift sets
- 3.0 mm — premium weight, noticeable heft in the hand
- 3.5 mm — maximum rigidity for oversized or display-grade formats
Board thickness is chosen based on the interior dimensions of the box, the weight of the product it will carry, and the perceived premium the client wants to communicate. Heavier board adds cost in material and shipping weight but delivers a measurable difference in the tactile experience.
Outer Wrap
The wrap is what a customer sees and touches first. It is also the substrate that your print, foil, or texture goes on. Six wrap categories are available:
Coated Art Paper (128–157 gsm)
Smooth, slightly sheen surface, ideal for full-colour lithographic printing and photographic imagery. The most commonly used wrap for retail and cosmetic gift boxes.
Uncoated Text Stock (120–150 gsm)
Porous, matte, and warm to the touch. Ink absorbs into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface, producing a rich, slightly softer colour output. Works exceptionally well with embossing and foil stamping.
Wibalin Linen
A paper-backed fabric material with a woven textile appearance. Colour is built into the material rather than printed on it, making it the right choice for designs that communicate through texture alone. Available in a wide colour range; decoration is limited to foil and emboss.
Brillianta Bookbinding Cloth
A cotton and polyester weave used in premium publishing and archival applications. Exceptionally durable, with a refined look that reads as genuinely handmade. Suited to spirits packaging, collector editions, and prestige corporate gifting.
PU Leather Film (0.6–0.9 mm)
A vegan leather material with a grain texture and soft-grip surface. Commonly used for tech accessories, whisky gift sets, and high-end personal care packaging where a leather aesthetic is appropriate but genuine leather is not.
Recycled Kraft (90–120 gsm)
A natural brown stock that communicates sustainability without a graphic treatment. Works well with one- to four-colour litho and screen printing, and pairs effectively with a blind deboss logo.
Magnetic Closure System
The closure is the defining feature of this box format. We use N35-grade neodymium rare-earth magnets — the strongest commercially available grade for this application — in a standard size of 10 mm diameter by 3 mm depth. Each magnet is set into a pre-routed channel in the chipboard before the outer wrap is applied, making it completely invisible from the outside surface.
Magnet pairs are placed at opposing poles so the lid pulls straight and closes evenly across the full width of the box. Most standard gift box formats use two magnet pairs — one at each end of the hinge line. Wider or heavier lid formats use three or four pairs for a stronger, more even closure. Pull force per pair is approximately 1.2 to 1.8 kg, which means the lid holds securely during transit but opens without effort for the end user.
Interior Finish Options
The inside of a gift box is seen the moment the lid lifts — it is the first interior impression, and it needs to match the exterior quality.
Paper Lining
Pantone-matched paper wrapped to the interior walls and base. Clean, consistent, and available in any solid colour. Standard on all orders unless an upgrade is specified.
Flocked Velvet
A fibre-applied surface that creates a soft, plush texture on the interior walls. Available in a full Pantone range. Standard choice for jewelry, watch, and small cosmetic formats.
EVA Foam Insert
A closed-cell foam cut to the profile of the product. Available in black, white, and custom colours. Protects fragile products and positions them precisely within the box.
Thermoformed Tray
A plastic tray vacuum-formed to a product’s exact three-dimensional geometry. Used for multi-piece sets, fragile electronics, and confectionery collections where foam alone would not provide adequate support.
Satin or Linen Fabric
Stretched fabric lining for a soft, couture interior. Commonly used in high-end fashion, jewellery, and premium gifting programs.
Gift Accessories
Co-ordinating accessories are available and sourced to match the box specification:
- Grosgrain or satin ribbon in Pantone-matched colours
- Single-colour or two-colour printed tissue paper
- Custom-printed gift message cards or branded inserts
- Reusable inner trays for product positioning and presentation
- Outer shipper cartons sized to the gift box for e-commerce fulfilment
Accessories can be supplied pre-assembled inside each box or flat-packed for fulfilment team assembly, depending on the client’s operation.
Sustainability Options
All greyboard is available in FSC-certified grades with full chain-of-custody documentation on request. Outer wrap papers can be specified at 30%, 50%, or 100% post-consumer waste recycled content. Assembly uses water-based adhesives throughout, making the finished product recyclable through standard municipal paper streams without requiring manual delamination. Soy-based inks are available for all offset-printed wraps. Neodymium magnets are press-set without adhesive and can be removed by hand before recycling.
Sizes
All dimensions are interior measurements in millimetres, given as Length × Width × Height. Custom sizing is available at no additional tooling charge on orders of 500 units or more.
| Format | Interior Dimensions | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| Petite | 80 × 60 × 30 mm | Jewelry, USB drives, lip products, small trinkets |
| Small | 130 × 95 × 50 mm | Perfume, travel skincare, single-watch presentation |
| Medium | 200 × 150 × 70 mm | Candles, gift sets, folded apparel, branded stationery |
| Large | 300 × 220 × 90 mm | Shoes, electronics, wine bottle, bundled gift sets |
| Extra Large | 380 × 280 × 110 mm | Hampers, art prints, multi-SKU luxury collections |
| Fully Custom | Your specification | Any product — submit dimensions or a physical sample |
Tolerances on all sizes are ±2 mm. For products with unusual geometry, fragile surfaces, or foam insert requirements, submitting a physical sample is the most reliable way to ensure the dieline and interior cut are built to the actual product.
Printing Methods
Offset Lithography
The standard process for high-volume, colour-accurate print on coated wrap stocks. A printed sheet is laminated and then mounted onto the board, delivering 175-line halftone reproduction, consistent Pantone solids, and the depth of ink coverage needed for photography-heavy designs. Physical press proofs are available before production sign-off.
Hot Foil Stamping
A heated die presses metallic or pigmented foil directly onto the wrap surface. Available in gold, silver, rose gold, holographic, matte black, and custom-matched Pantone foils. Highly effective on uncoated and textile wraps where the contrast between raw texture and metallic finish is sharpest.
Embossing and Debossing
Male and female tooling dies create a raised or recessed impression in the wrap and board beneath it. Blind emboss uses no ink or foil — the image is visible only through shadow and light. Registered foil deboss combines a metallic fill with a recessed impression for a high-dimensional effect.
Spot UV Coating
A UV-cured varnish applied to selected areas of a laminated surface. The coated zones cure to a high-gloss finish while the surrounding matte laminate remains flat. Creates a visual and tactile contrast that draws attention to a logo or key graphic element without adding colour.
Digital Short-Run Print
For orders under 500 units or designs requiring variable data — personalised names, numbered editions, unique QR codes — we use HP Indigo digital printing on pre-laminated wrap stock. Minimum 100 units per design. No plate setup fees.
Lamination Options
Every litho-printed wrap is protected with a laminate before mounting. Options include gloss (vivid, durable), matte (flat, anti-fingerprint), soft-touch (suede-like, premium feel), and anti-scratch (for retail shelf or high-transit environments).
Surface Finish Summary
| Finish | Description | Best Paired With |

FAQ’S
What is a custom magnetic gift box?
A custom magnetic gift box is a rigid box format built from thick chipboard, wrapped in paper or fabric, and fitted with a lid held shut by concealed neodymium magnets. Unlike a folding carton or a standard setup box, it holds its shape permanently and opens with a deliberate, tactile pull rather than a tuck or a tie. The magnets are press-set inside the board and invisible from the outside. It is used by brands in beauty, jewelry, fashion, food, and corporate gifting to create an unboxing experience that communicates quality before the product is seen.
What is the minimum order for custom magnetic gift boxes?
The standard minimum order quantity is 500 units per SKU for offset-printed custom magnetic gift boxes. For buyers who need smaller quantities — typically 100 units or more — a digital short-run option is available using HP Indigo printing, with no plate setup fees and full customisation. Pre-production samples are produced before any full run begins and cost is credited back against the first order.
Can I get a completely custom size for a magnetic gift box?
Yes. Custom sizing is available on all orders meeting the 500-unit minimum, at no additional tooling charge. You can specify your required interior dimensions in millimetres, send a physical product sample, or provide a 3D CAD file. The structural engineering team builds the dieline and issues a PDF proof before cutting begins. Standard tolerances are ±2 mm on all dimensions.
What printing options are available for custom magnetic gift boxes?
Available print methods include offset lithography for full-colour wraps, hot foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold, and custom-matched foils, blind embossing and debossing, spot UV coating, and digital short-run print for variable data or low volumes. Surface finishes include gloss, matte, soft-touch, and anti-scratch lamination. All techniques can be combined on a single specification.
Are custom magnetic gift boxes recyclable?
Yes. The chipboard core and paper wrap are recyclable through standard municipal paper streams when assembled with water-based adhesives, which is the default. FSC-certified board and recycled-content wrap papers are available on all orders. The neodymium magnets are the only non-paper component and can be removed manually before recycling. Soy-based inks are available for litho-printed wraps.
